03 / Beyond the Box

UNBOXED the Exhibition stays open to the public March 21-28 2027 but is designed to continue far beyond that. Through an online community, future creative experiences, and ongoing workshops and events, we hope to create lasting opportunities for connection, reflection, and mental well-being throughout the year.

UNBOXED isn't just an Art Exhibition, it's a community experience designed to open honest conversations about mental health, challenge stigma, and remind people they are not alone.

The Story and Artist Behind UNBOXED

Art has always been my tool to help me process, explore, and understand my emotions. The process of creating has been my safe space for as long as I can remember and above all- a place where I feel most alive.

A few years ago, I went through an incredibly challenging season where I found myself in a constant battle with my mental health. I experienced deep periods of depression where getting off the couch felt impossible, and overwhelming anxiety where my mind was constantly consumed by my worst fears, which felt impossible to escape. Looking back, I think a lot of that had to do with being so disconnected from my purpose- which is that of being an artist.

When I finally decided to let go of the fear and move forward with what felt true to me, I unexpectedly began creating my first photographic self-portrait series: Unboxing of an Open Mind. What started as a personal journey of expression became a visual exploration of the emotions, struggles, and experiences so many people quietly carry.

I have never believed that our struggles are something to hide or be ashamed of. Through vulnerability and honest storytelling, my hope is that these images allow people to see pieces of themselves, better understand the experiences of others, and create more empathy within our community. I believe giving people a visual representation of what is so often a silent, invisible struggle creates space for understanding, connection, and hope.

Throughout my own healing journey, I explored countless traditional and non-traditional resources- many of which are represented through the Wellness Partners involved with UNBOXED. But one of the most powerful things I discovered was the importance of community. Healing does not happen in isolation. We need spaces where we can connect, share our experiences, and be reminded that we are not alone.

UNBOXED was created from that belief: that art can open the mind, and community can open the heart. My vision is to bring something fresh, unexpected, and meaningful to Port Huron- a space that is not only visually inspiring, but one that creates real connection and continues to grow beyond a single exhibition. Through future experiences, conversations, and creative opportunities, UNBOXED aims to become an ongoing movement centered around connection, creativity, and mental well-being.

We are currently in the building phase of UNBOXED.
